WHAT IS VIRTUAL REALITY OR VR?

Virtual reality is a computer-generated artificial 3-D environment created with software, which simulates image, sound, smells, etc. It is mostly used in entertainment and educational purpose, training and learning, and also in health care purposes.  Whenever you put on a headset, it leads you to a virtual digital world replacing your real world. It fools your senses and makes you feel that you are actually in another world which is not real.


HISTORY OF VR :

1838 - The basic concepts of virtual reality began in the 18th century.  This year, the first stereoscope was invented, it was a projector which projected a single image with two mirrors. Later, it was developed as a view- master in 1939.

1962- In this year, Mort Heilig, a filmmaker of the Hollywood Motion picture industry invented a booth like machine called Sensor-ma which was a cabinet with 3D display sense producer. He wanted to make the audience feel the movies in real by giving a real environment where they could see roads moving, sounds, and feel the vibrations. 

1965- In this year, Ivan Sutherland invented a head-mounted device which was one step closer to the modern virtual reality.

1980- The term virtual reality was first used in this year by Jaron Lanier, founder of VPL research. In
this year, NASA AMES RESEARCH CENTER, virtual interface environment workstation combined a head-mounted device with glass to enable haptic interaction which allows us to move into the virtual world.


COMPONENTS OF VR :

VR Headset: It is a head-mounted apparatus that covers the eyes to give you an immersive Virtual Reality experience. This is widely used in video games, training purposes, etc.

VR Gloves: The VR gloves allow you to touch and feel the virtual environment with your hand.

VR Controller: It is like a remote to control your Virtual Reality as per your will.

Today, virtual reality is growing faster. The best VR  companies at present are-

1. Oculus VR:- It was founded in July 2012 in California by Palmer Luckey, Brendan Iribe, Michael Antonov, and Nate Mitchell. Oculus Rift for high-performance gaming costs almost $ 599.  Oculus go, another VR headset manufactured by Oculus released on 1May, 2018 costs $149 and the operating system is  Android 7.1.2. Oculus Quest costs $399 (64 GB) and $ 499 ( 128 GB) and the operating system is Android 7.1.1.


2. HTC:- It was founded in 1997. The headquarter is in New Taipei City, Taiwan. It mainly deals with smartphones and VR headsets. HTC headset HTC Vive costs almost $ 799. The field view of this headset is 110 degrees. It can be used only in Windows PC.


3. Samsung:- It was founded in 1938 by Lee- Byung Chul in Seoul, South Korea. The headquarter is in Samsung city, Seoul. It mainly deals with smartphones, T.V, and other electronic appliances and also with VR technology. The Samsung Gear headset costs $99.99 which can be used in Samsung smartphone ( Samsung Galaxy Note 5, Samsung Galaxy S6, Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+, Samsung Galaxy S7, Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, Samsung Galaxy Note FE )

4. Google:- Google was founded in 1998 in California. The headquarter is in Mountain View, California. Google Cardboard, Google's VR technology costs from $20 to $30 and supported in most of the smartphones.


5. Unity:- It is a game development platform developed by Unity Technologies. It uses VR technologies to develop games and most of Hololens experiences are made with Unity. Unity 3D is the most popular VR software.

6. Magic leap:- Magic leap was founded in 2011 by Rony Abovitz. Magic Leap is a head-mounted computer that can give you an experience of the mixture of real-world and virtual worlds and it costs around $ 2,295.


7. Worldviz:- Worldviz deals with VR  software and hardware for professionals and it was founded in 2002 by Peter Schlueter. The headquarter is in Santa Barbara, California.VIZARD is a VR development software by Worldviz. VISIBLE is another VR creation and collaboration software.

8. Snap Inc.:- Snap Inc. is a camera and social media company founded by Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy in 2011 in Santa Monica, California, dealing with the products Snapchat, Bitmoji, and spectacles. Recently, Augmented Reality was introduced in Snapchat, which is a popular interactive platform by Snap Inc.

9.Wevr:- Wevr was founded by Neville Spiteri, Anthony Batt, and Scott Yara in 2009 in Venice Beach, California. It is a Virtual Reality community and VR Media Player.

10.  Firsthand technology:- It was founded in 1995 whose headquarter is in Seattle, Washington. It deals with Virtual Reality in the field of health care by bringing products to leading medical institutions.

GAMING:-Gaming industry will be the most beneficial one with the improvement of the application of virtual reality by making more interesting and real games. Biosensing is the detection of the presence of a person in a game by using small sensors. VR games allowed the gamer to get inside it and they can modify the game environment as per their will. The adventure, action games are getting enhanced with VR technology.

VIRTUAL TRAVEL:- With the growing technology, people will like to amazing experiences with lesser time, and VR technology can make it possible. You can tour all over the world with real experience just by sitting at home.

SMART EDUCATION AND TRAINING:- It will be possible to train the students without even the presence of everyone in the classroom, like we do now.

MEDICAL SCIENCE:- Medical science is mostly beneficial with VR technology as they can see the inner part of the human body in real. They can sense it and have a close look at every small part.

BUSINESS INTERACTION AND INTERVIEWS:- With Virtual Reality, business conferences will be easy to organize, you don't need to miles for such interaction. Interviews will also be made easy with this technology.

TYPES OF VIRTUAL REALITY:

1. Fully Immersive:- It gives the users the most realistic experience of Virtual Reality usually used in gaming and in some entertainment purposes. It is obviously costly with the use of headset, gloves etc.
2. Semi Immersive:- This is a kind of mixed Reality where the combination of Virtual and Real-world is applied to give the users full experience of the environment. Semi Immersive VR is used in educational and training purposes.
3. In- Immersive:- It is not actually termed as a part VR. The common highly advanced video games are of Non- Immersive type.
4. Augmented Reality:- It is the superposition of the virtual world and the real-world usually experienced in smartphones.
5. Collaborative Virtual Reality:- It is mainly video conferences that allow several users to get the same virtual environment at the same time.

TOOLS FOR DESIGN PURPOSE:

1. VRML (Virtual Reality Modelling Language):-  It is a file format for 3-D information like sounds, animations, etc. Simply, you can 3-D version of HTML.
2. X3D:- It is also a file format for 3-D graphics which can be termed as an improved version of VRML. It uses the extension .X3D.
3. 3DML:- It can also be used for 3-D architecture such as creating 3-D websites etc. It was first  invented by Michael Powers in 1997. It uses the extension.DML 
4.COLLADA(Collaborative Design Activity):- It is a file format used for interactive 3-D applications to interchange 3-D assets between different applications. It uses the extension .dae file.

WHAT IS AUGMENTED REALITY(AR)?

Augmented reality is a superimposition of the physical world with computer-generated scenes, sound with the use of software, glasses, apps, etc to give you a modified experience. Pokemon go is one of the popular experience of Augmented  Reality.


DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VIRTUAL REALITY AND AUGMENTED REALITY:

1. Virtual Reality is the computer-generated environment that gives you a totally different world but Augmented Reality is the modification of the real world with technology.

2. To experience Virtual Reality, you need to wear head-mounted gadgets which is very costly, but Augmented Reality can be experienced easily with your smartphone.
