Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary is a beautiful place with an area of 45.57 square km. Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary is mainly famous for the endangered species of Golden Langurs. It is the second protected habitat of Golden Langurs in India. In 1986, Golden Langurs in Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary was discovered by the members of an environmental activist group, Natures Beckon. A few years ago, Golden Langur was found in Umananda island of Assam too, but it disappeared from there due to some human activities. Chakrashila hill was first declared as a reserved forest in 1966. Later, it was established as a wildlife sanctuary by the Government of Assam on 14 July 1994. In this process, Nature's Beckon has an important role. The Sanctuary has a number of beautiful birds which makes it a paradise for bird watchers. It is also preferable for trekking and rock climbing. You can visit the nearby villages to know the lifestyle of local tribes. The main community living in nearby villages are – Rabha, Bodo, Garo, and Rajbanshi. You can have the experience of their way of agriculture and can enjoy the beauty of the paddy fields. They have unique food, dresses, and culture. 

WHERE CHAKRASHILA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY IS LOCATED?


Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the western part of Assam, India in the districts of Dhubri and Kokrajhar. Both the districts fall under BTC (Bodoland Territorial Council). It is surrounded by green forests and beautiful lakes preparing a beautiful view for you. The distance from Kokrajhar is around 6 km and the distance from Dhubri is around 219 km. The distance from the capital of the state, Guwahati is around 200 km. 

HOW IS THE CLIMATE OF CHAKRASHILA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY?


The climate of Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary is pleasant and comfortable for the visitors. It falls under the tropical moist category. The annual average rainfall is about 2000 mm to 4000 mm. The temperature of the place ranges from 8 degrees to 30 degrees centigrade. During July and August, heavy rainfall occurs and this time is not suitable for visitors. During summer, the relative humidity is about to 86%. The best time to visit is from November to April.

WHAT ARE THE BIRDS AND ANIMALS FOUND IN CHAKRASHILA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY?


ANIMALS: Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary is a habitat of rare endangered Golden Langurs(Presbytis Geei). Golden langurs belong to an old monkey family containing a black face and a very long tail. The only where golden langurs are found us western Assam and Indo- Bhutan border. Apart from this, there are 30 other species of mammals found there. Some of them are as follows- Leopard, Bengal Fox, Chinese Pangolin, Barking Deer, Rhesus Macaque, Short-nosed Fruit Bat, Indian False Vampire, Indian Pipistrelle, Asiatic Jackal, Porcupine, Sambar, etc. 

BIRDS AND BEES: Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary is also rich with the different species of birds, bees and insects found there. As per record, 250 species of birds, 40 species of butterflies, and around 60 species of insects are found there. Among the birds, some of them are endangered species included in IUCN Red Data Book. The bird diversity is contributed by the two lakes Dheer and Deeplai. These water bodies are mainly attracted by both the inhibitory and migratory birds. Some of the bird species found there are – Pond Heron, Night Heron, Little Egret, Intermediate Egret, Large Egret, Greater Adjutant Stork, Lesser Adjutant Stork, Hornbill, Owl, Tailor Birds, Kingfisher, Shag, Sunbirds, Dove, Minivets, Darter, Lesser Whistling Teal, Cotton Teal, Magpie Robin, Shrikes, Green Pigeon, Little Cormorant, Barbets, etc.

A protected birdlife data zone for birds known as Chakrashila Complex comprises of Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary and the lakes Dheer, Deeplai, and Dakra.

PLANTS: Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary has rich vegetation with different species of plants and grasses. The forest is of semi-evergreen type. Some of the plant species found there are- Sal tree, Bogiopoma, Amari, Moj, Paroli, Himolu, Gomari, Hilikha, etc. The Sanctuary is surrounded by hills and the lower hilly parts are covered with sal trees. The middle and upper parts are covered with mixed deciduous forests. 

REPTILES AND AMPHIBIANS: There are 14 species of reptiles and 11 species of amphibians are found in Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary including Turtles, Frogs, different species of Lizards, different species of snakes, etc. 

FISHES: There are 60 different kinds of fishes are found in the wetlands of Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary. The major contribution to the diversity of fishes is by the lakes Dheer and Deeplai.

HOW TO REACH CHAKRASHILA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY?


BY AIR: The nearest airport is at Guwahati which is around 250 km away. You can take a bus or cab from there to reach Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary.

BY TRAIN: The nearest railway station is at Kokrajhar. It is a broad gauge line. 

BY ROAD: Road is well connected to the Sanctuary. The distance from Guwahati is around 250 km, from Dhubri is around 70 km, from Bongaigaon is around 50 km and from Kokrajhar is around 7 km. 

WHERE TO STAY IN CHAKRASHILA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY?


There are many hotels and resorts are available in the nearby area. But for Government facility, you can contact the D.F.O. Wildlife Division, Kokrajhar. There is a forest rest house where accommodation is provided. There is a camp called Tapoban camp where accommodation is provided by a local NGO, Nature's Beckon. The nearest town is at Salkocha, about 10 km away from the Sanctuary.
