LOCATION & CLIMATE of PANIDIHING
Panidihing Bird Sanctuary, a place of melodies and chirruping sounds of the birds, situated in Sivasagar district, Assam, India. It is 22 km away from the main town of Sivasagar. You can go there either by train, bus or flight. The nearest airport is at Dibrugarh. This is a wetland comprising of area 33.93 square kilometers. This was established as a bird sanctuary in august 1996. The Brahmaputra river is to the North West and the Dishang river is to the south of the sanctuary. The annual temperature is about 10-35 degrees centigrade and the average annual rainfall is about 3500 mm. It is the best place for bird enthusiasts. The birds flying and singing all over the place will give you unlimited pleasure. The best time to visit there from November to April because, at this time, the migratory birds come here for shelter and food.
FLORA AND FAUNA OF PANIDIHING
The sanctuary has large water bodies including Phokolai and Dorou Beels which are outside the sanctuary. The main water bodies inside the sanctuary are Sagunpora, Ghoka, Tokia, Jarjara etc. The place is flat. It used to be an attraction of the hunters for the ducks and the goose. Now it is stopped but illegal hunting is still seen there. The wetlands are always full of residential birds and it becomes a heaven during the winter season for the migratory birds from the cold places of Syberia, Europe, Tibet, etc. It is a very curious thing that the birds come thousands of miles here for food and shelter. The migrating birds use various factors to determine their direction like the clues from the sun, stars, the magnetic field of earth and mental maps, etc. These birds have physical adaptations to migrate through long distances. During this season, they conserve more fats for more energy to fly.
There are almost 267 species of birds are found in Panidhing Bird Sanctuary including a number of migratory birds. Some of the birds seen there are as follows- Mallards, Gadwall, Bar-headed goose- Anser indicus, Ferruginous duck, Red Crested Pochard, Spot-Billed Duck, Greylag goose- A. Anser, Wigeon, Shoveller, White-necked stork, Kingfisher, Open bill stork, Lesser adjutant stork, White Rumped Vulture, Griffon.
The area is mainly covered by woods and green grasses. The northern border is covered with Arundo Donax and some other plants. Other than birds, some animals are also identified there. Sometimes Asian elephants also seen there. Otters and hog deers are regularly seen. Gongotic Dolphin Plantanista Gangatica are seen during the monsoon season which are found regularly in the Brahmaputra river. Some kind of Reptiles like brown Roof Turtle ( Kachuga Smithii), Indian Tent Turtle ( km tentoria), Gangetic softshell are also found there.
HOW TO REACH PANIDIHING
1. By bus- The nearest bus station is at Sivasagar. You can hire a tempo from there to reach your destination.2. By flight- The nearest airport is at Dibrugarh. You can take a bus from there to reach your destination.
3. By train- You can either go from Jorhat or from Sivasagar.
NEARBY PLACES TO VISIT
1. Shiva Dol - It is a Shiva temple made during the Ahom dynasty situated in the heart of Sivasagar. There is a lake Sivasagar Pukhuri nearby it which is also a place of attraction. There are two other temples Vishnu Dol and Devi Dol which are also places to visit.
2. Rang Ghar- It is also situated in the main town of Sivasagar. It was mainly a building for the entertainment of the Ahom kings.
3. Talatal Ghar- It is also a place of mystery and attraction for the visitors. It consists of a number of floors, of which some are under the ground. The monument has a lot of things that are still not discovered.
